Tourism is not all about sun lust or wanderlust. Gambling is one of the most powerful factors that drive humans to travel. This industry is truly enormous, with land-based establishments visited by millions of players from all around the globe. This explains why the governments of some countries pour money into their large luxurious casinos. After all, despite their infamous nature, they attract investors and tourists, thereby helping the local economy.
In 2019, tourism for the sake of gambling has not lost its popularity. The states where tourism is boosted by casino ambiance, include the USA, Macau in China, and Australia.
Since 2015, the City of Sin, Las Vegas, has accounted for approximately 42 million tourists annually. This is hardly surprising. Clearly, when one thinks of casinos, one thinks of Las Vegas.
Another global gambling hub, Macau, is also committed to providing its high rollers with excellent VIP services. Such players are eligible for golden membership benefits, private rooms, unparalleled facilities, etc. Following the 2014 anti-corruption crackdown from the Chinese government, the establishment managed to stabilize its profits, as the casinos target mass consumers as well. Overall, last year, Macau received over 32 million visitors, 7.53 million of which were repeated visitors in the calendar year.
However, a portion of Macau visitors was still dissatisfied, and they opted for Australian establishments instead (around 1 million people). Australian casinos have been developing rapidly. So much so that they became one of the country’s most significant attractions with around 10 million visitors in recent years.
In addition to the big countries, smaller states have also seen soaring numbers of traveling gamblers. For example, the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, and Monaco have been reaping impressive revenues thanks to tourists with a penchant for gambling.
Singapore, which is a popular shopping destination, joined the ranks of global casino capitals long ago. In fact, it is still one of the major tourists draws, with roughly 17 million tourists last year. Here, casinos tend to be more careful, as they are unable to pursue high debtors, and they extend lines of credit to the gamblers themselves.
Since casinos are magnets for people from different countries, there are many benefits to the local economy and certain industries in particular. The hospitality sector provides accommodation to millions of new guests. Wherever there is a casino, you are sure to find resorts, hotels, and restaurants. Secondly, conventional tourist attractions in the area are visited by more foreign tourists.
In the future, the global industry is only expected to grow further. Given the undeniable benefits to local economies, we are unlikely to see any of those famous establishments vanish. The Japanese government, for example, has recently legalized integrated resorts with casinos. The purpose of the change is to attract more international visitors, thereby boosting local economies.
